Behind every cloud there is a silver lining. The COVID-19 epidemic which swept the nation is no different, having beared witness to shows of compassion from all levels of society.

Overwhelming appreciation and praise has been directed to front liners, who are the first line of defence in battling the disease.

Despite this, the contribution of garbage disposal workers should not be forgotten. This hardworking group of workers toil day in and day out to ensure our rubbish and waste is promptly collected and disposed of.

These workers have put their own health and personal safety at risk in order to carry out their duties, of which a large number of us tend to look down on as dirty, dangerous and demeaning.

YBM Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin has acknowledged the role of these workers and crowned them as Heroes of Society. After all, without them who else would be willing to perform these works?

Adding significance to the above is the date 17 June 2020 being named National Cleaning Workers Day, as a token of appreciation to all waste disposal workers in Malaysia. This is the first and inaugural occasion of the day being celebrated on a national level.
