Road To More Female Firefighters in Malaysia
Firefighter may be concluded as one of the least attractive jobs for women in this country today, with only 5 percent of them currently in the field.
To solve this issue, Housing and Local Government Ministry will review the terms on the recruitment of female firefighters, to achieve the 30 percent of women’s representation in the Fire and Rescue Department.
Minister, YB Zuraida Kamaruddin said that the review includes less stringent criteria and standards in physical tests, and putting them in the administration section to ensure it is less dangerous for women.
“Every year, having more femalefighters in the field has been our concern. But the time has come to really focus on it by reviewing the terms,” she said.
Female firefighters play a significant role in reaching out women victims, especially after a traumatic experience.
In addition, female firefighters will have a closer connection to housewives, in efforts to create more awareness on fire safety and prevention.
