Today in History: Daim resigns

2 June 2001, Kuala Lumpur:
Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin had resigned, said Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Dr Mahathir said he had accepted the resignation.

The announcement ended speculation that had been rife since Tun Daim went on two months’ leave which ended on 31 May.

Dr Mahathir said Tun Daim wanted to resign two months earlier but he had told him to go on leave first and reconsider.

This was Tun Daim’s second resignation as Finance Minister. The first was in 1991.
