16,840 Covid-19 cases, ICU occupancy hits 1,055

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 16,840 Covid-19 cases and 134 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Over the past two days, cases breached the 17,000 mark.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 12,179 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 902,921.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stood at 1,095,486.

Twenty-five of the new cases today were category 5, while 79 were category 4. About 180 were category 3 infections.

There are 183,706 active cases with a record 1,055 patients being treated in intensive care and 532 requiring respiratory assistance.

The 1,055 overtook the 1,043 in the ICU yesterday.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 6,092.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,114), Kedah (1,281), Johor (1,104), Negeri Sembilan (1,079), Sabah (1,066), Perak (810), Penang (689), Kelantan (656), Melaka (581), Pahang (540), Sarawak (450), Terengganu (258), Putrajaya (100), Perlis (13) and Labuan (7).

There were 16,823 local infections today, involving 14,014 Malaysians and 2,809 foreigners, as well as 17 imported cases.

The 134 deceased comprised 128 Malaysians and six foreigners. All but 20 had existing medical conditions while nine were brought in dead.

Selangor reported the highest number of deaths with 35, followed by Melaka (17), Johor and Negeri Sembilan (15 each), Kedah and Perak (12 each), Kuala Lumpur (10), Sabah (6), Terengganu (5), Pahang (4), Kelantan (2) and Penang (1).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate stood at 1.15.

Terengganu recorded the highest R-nought level again with 1.36. Other states and federal territories that recorded R0 levels above 1 were Kelantan (1.27), Sabah (1.22), Kedah (1.21), Johor (1.18), Penang (1.18), Perak (1.18), Pahang (1.15), Putrajaya (1.15), Kuala Lumpur (1.14), Selangor (1.10), Sarawak (1.07) and Melaka (1.04). – FMT
