Support women athletes, not condemn their dressing – Zuraida
KUALA LUMPUR, 2 AUGUST : Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin has urged the public to support women athletes in Tokyo Olympics games instead of condemning their outfit.
In a statement yesterday, she said that women athlete’s attire should not be an issue, thus degrading comments on how they dress should not arise at the first place.
“Negative comments on how she (women athletes) chose to dress, whether due to her personal choice, comfort or religious belief should never be tolerated.
“Just when women athletes have begun to take charge in how they dress, degrading and intolerant comments were made recently by a netizen which became widely publicised,” she said, commenting on a recent Facebook post by Hugh Lawrence Zehnder who criticised Malaysian runner, Azreen Nabila Alias for her fully-covered outfit.
Zuraida added, Azreen’s attire has nothing to do with her performance as an athlete.
“All national athletes in fact should be able to perform in their respective competitions with the peace of mind that his or her country is behind them,” she said.
The Facebook post has now been deleted due to an uproar by other Malaysians, including Zuraida herself. – PPI
