France reports over 19,000 fresh COVID-19 infections

PARIS, Jan 2 — France reported 19,348 new coronavirus cases Friday, bringing total infections to 2.6 million, Anadolu Agency reported. Fatalities rose to 64,765 with 133 additional deaths. The positivity rate is currently at 3.8 per cent. Of 7,242 patients receiving treatment at hospitals in the past seven days, 1,133 are in intensive care. Because of rising cases, a curfew would be extended in 15 departments across four high-risk regions beginning Saturday, according to government spokesman Gabriel Attal. US Congress votes to override Trump’s veto of massive defence bill

WASHINGTON, Jan 2 — The US Congress has voted to override President Donald Trump’s veto of a US$740.5-billion defence policy bill, Xinhua news agency reported. The Republican-led Senate voted 81 to 13 in a rare New Year’s Day session on Friday to join the House, controlled by Democrats, in overriding Trump’s veto, making the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2021 a law.
